Government CCTV cameras in UK homes.

American Libertarians like Jason Bermas are well and truly freaked out by the Daily Express story that the UK government is planning to put 20,000 CCTV cameras into the homes of families who have been sucked into the orbit of the all powerful Social Workers.

Weirdly though, Brits don't seem to care. Are we all too drunk to notice? Too much flouride in the drinking water perhaps? How did we get so passive and compliant in this country?

Total non-cooperation and non-compliance is the only sane and rational way to deal with Social Services.

The notion that absolute freedom is attainable is utopian to say the least. How can individuals, as you say, recognise the rights of others when freedom would entail being able to limit the rights of others and, in any case, any activity could infringe the rights of others generally? I presume you have not ready Issiah Berlin or Erich Fromm? Berlin tells us that in order for the common good to be protected the freedom and rights of some have to be negatively restricted. Even Tony Blair understood this. Talk of reaching some transcendent ideal in which all power relations and the apparent nature of humans are negated should be dustbinned.

"The notion that absolute freedom is attainable is utopian to say the least."

I never said "absolute freedom is attainable". Nice straw man!

"How can individuals, as you say, recognise the rights of others when freedom would entail being able to limit the rights of others and, in any case, any activity could infringe the rights of others generally?"

Who are you talking to? How is that comment related to my post about social services?

"I presume you have not ready [sic] Issiah Berlin or Erich Fromm?"

Are you having a conversation with someone else? I don't think Issiah Berlin or Erich Fromm had a single word to say about government CCTV cameras in private homes.

"Talk of reaching some transcendent ideal in which all power relations and the apparent nature of humans are negated should be dustbinned [sic]."

I didn't say anything about "reaching some transcendent ideal in which all power relations and the apparent nature of humans are negated". Please comment on the posting and not the voices in your head.

Well no, I think you mean authority would entail..., freedom is something different, check your dictionary if unclear.

Good post, as you say it's a shame more fuss isn't being made in the UK about this kind of thing. We shouldn't need an American to point out to us what's wrong with this country.

By the way, I've done a quick edit and put the embed code in the post itself so people can play the video just by clicking on it. For future reference, you just copy the embed code from YouTube, open the HTML tab when you're posting and paste the code into the appropriate place in your post. Easy. It just looks a bit nicer.
